SERVE GOOD

The Serve Good™ program represents our continuing effort at US Foods® to serve delicious food while serving the greater good. Products within the Serve Good portfolio are developed with suppliers who are as committed to those initiatives as we are, and many items come with the reassurance of verification by third-party certifiers.

To be included in the Serve Good program, a product requires two attributes. First, it must come with a claim of responsible sourcing or contribution to waste reduction. These claims can fall into one of several categories:

Second, Serve Good products must arrive to our customers in packaging that meets our stringent policy. These standards reduce waste, prioritize the use of recycled materials and help minimize our ecological footprint.

We’re excited to partner with our operators to meet the increasing demand for these products – and to help ensure those resources will be available for future generations to enjoy. For product and purchase information, view our comprehensive Serve Good portfolio:

ORGANIC FOODS

Packaging with the Non-GMO Project Verified seal conveys that the product has been produced using non-GMO practices, as certified by a third party. US Foods® is proud to offer a number of non-GMO products.

There are three levels of USDA certification specifying varying degrees of organic products in food. All organic ingredients are non-GMO and free of synthetic substances in accordance with USDA regulations. They are raised without chemical pesticides, fungicides or fertilizers, and livestock is raised without antibiotics or synthetic growth hormones. Organic products are segregated in production and must be certified by a USDA-approved certifying agent.

US Foods® is dedicated to providing our operators, and their customers, more options – including organic – that reflect evolving attitudes toward our food and how it’s grown and raised.

NON-GMO PRODUCTS

Non-GMO products do not contain any genetically modified organisms (GMOs), which means they have not been genetically altered in any way. This initiative assists farmers, processors and manufacturers in avoiding GMO-contaminated ingredients by routinely testing high-risk ingredients and building identity-preservation practices into the supply chain.

SUSTAINABLE SEAFOOD

Overfishing and other environmentally harmful fishing practices threaten local and global habitats, as well as future food stocks. From our ocean-farmed Norwegian trout and salmon to our striped bass farmed off the coast of Mexico to our Icelandic char harvested using green techniques and geothermal energy, US Foods® is committed to sustainable fishing practices and helping safeguard the health of our environment.

FARM-RAISED

Farm-raised Progress Check fish and seafood must be on the path to certification by an accredited third-party certifier, such as Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) certification through the Global Aquaculture Alliance (GAA). They may also be part of an aquaculture improvement plan such as iBAP, a precursor to BAP certification, or have received a BAP rating of at least one star. (One star recognizes products produced by a BAP-certified processing plant.)

WILD-CAUGHT

Fisheries that supply our wild-caught Progress Check seafood products must be on a path to accreditation through a third party such as the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC). Many fisheries undergo assessment and develop a Fishery Improvement Project (FIP) that gathers all stakeholders together to ensure the viability of the fishery.

PROGRESS CHECK

Achieving the highest levels of sustainability certification requires years of investment from fisheries, farms and processors. Our Progress Check™ program recognizes seafood products that are on their way to meeting our Serve Good™ sustainability standards. We have defined a timeline in which each Progress Check product must reach certain benchmarks in order to become a Serve Good product.

Animal Care

Today’s consumers expect more choices, greater transparency and higher standards for those responsible for bringing food to their plates. An overwhelming majority of diners are concerned about the treatment and welfare of animals in agriculture – including what those animals are fed, how they’re sheltered and the traceability of humane farming practices.

The American Humane Association (AHA), which specializes in the welfare of livestock and poultry in the U.S., has established comprehensive, science-based standards for pork, beef, poultry and dairy to help ensure that farms raising livestock and poultry under their certification improve the welfare of animals.

At US Foods®, we work with the AHA and other third-party certifiers to help ensure the products featured in our Serve Good™ program meet certain terms and certifications. We are proud to offer our customers American Humane Certified products, as well as foods made from livestock raised without antibiotics and egg-laying hens raised in cage-free environments.

RESPONSIBLE DISPOSABLES

From pleasing a new era of eco-conscious diners to cutting waste and costs, sustainability is becoming more and more essential to foodservice operations. At US Foods®, we’re answering that demand with a selection of Serve Good™ disposables that. All of these products, which come with the reassurance of verification, are made from materials that are certified as one or more of the following:

New items made from materials diverted or recovered from waste destined for disposal are considered “post-consumer.” US Foods® products made with post-consumer material meet third-party UL certification standards.
